Daisy's ( f l o w e r s ) for De La
Our favorite Long Island trio has finally received their flowers. As of March 3, 2023 the groups entire 34 year spanning career (kudos alone to that!) is available to stream and download, having been freed from the clutches of Warner and Tommy Boy records. I’ve been playing the catalogue since the day and have been sonically transported back to my childhood of the early 90’s. With a cool father who had a penchant for soul music and 10 year older sister it’s no doubt in my mind their music was in constant rotation. It’s as of my spirit remembers the music of the times as songs I have never heard / don’t remember, feel so intrinsically familiar.
While Hip Hop music and culture have a huge hand in my upbringing and development, it wasn’t until late into my college years I sought out to educate myself on their music. You see, I’d been studying Literature, Poetry, Journalism, TV & Radio, as well as Public Relations as a means to become a staff writer for *insert any of the top 10 publications that sparked my love of the culture/writing/prose*. I could tell you anything about music of the times but groups like De La, whom were subconsciously pivotal in my love for this culture needed refreshing in my cerebral. I’m forever a student and grateful for the elders, publications, books, tv shows, radio shows, and inevitably internet platforms that were able to aid in not just mine but generations following education of some of the cultures trailblazers.
Truth be told, Digging is not something I need to do right now. My archive is so robust, that learning and sharing what I already have is my focus. However, I can rarely turn down a record store trip and that’s what brought me to this copy of “De La Soul is Dead.” As the world wanted with bated breath for their released music, and we sadly mourned the sudden loss of “Plug Two” Trugoy, it was truly divine timing for me to stumble into this original 1991 CD. In pristine condition it features tracks: “Johnny’s Dead AKA Vincent Mason”, “My Brother’s a Basehead”, “Kicked Out the House”, and “Who Do U Worship?” That were only available on CD as opposed to other formats.
“The limited edition double vinyl promotional copies of the album distributed to media before the official release did not feature these.” (Wikipedia).
